THE LIVED THEOLOGY OF CITIZENS AKRON
At Citizens Akron, we believe that our core beliefs and values should shape all that we are and do. We are a community of Christ followers, who are devoted to being the church, not only on Sunday, but in the everyday rhythms of life—where we live, work, and play. Our lived theology also informs our two primary structures: Villages and Celebration (click to learn more).
The gospel is central to all we do and all we are.
The good news of Jesus transforms, shapes, and propels us as a community.
Story Formed People – The Gospel of God, God’s big story, is the good news that the Kingdom of God is at hand and calls us to repentance and belief in response to this reality (Mark 1:14-15). This story forms how we live and conforms us more into the image of Jesus daily.
Abiding Communities – We seek to be communities of story formed people whose activity flows from deep abiding relationship with Jesus. As we fight to see our communities changed it is our ultimate priority to be connected to the vine (John 15:1-10).
The gospel calls us, as redeemed individuals, to live as the family of God.
We love all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, class, culture, or background, as Christ loves us.
Radical Transparency- In a spirit of humility and in opposition to our triumphalist culture that calls us to hide weakness, we seek to live transparent lives where we are honest with God and each other, confessing our sins to one another that we may be healed (2 Corinthians 12:9-11, James 5:16).
“Oneanothering”- Jesus teaches us that evidence of his presence in our lives is the love we have for one another. We seek to be a community that loves each other in tangible ways. (John 13:35)
The gospel calls us to engage in the mission of God by loving God with everything, and loving our neighbors as ourselves.
This includes proactively and reactively responding to mercy and justice issues in our communities.
Risk Taking Communities- We see to be a community of people that are willing to step out on faith take risks for the Kingdom of God (1 Samuel 14).
Placed Based Missionaries- We believe that mission is a Gospel identity. We seek to be a community of missionaries saturating the places we live work and play with the goodness of the Gospel. (Acts 1:8)
FOR ALL PEOPLE:
We believe that every person is created in the image of God.
We fight for reconciliation, celebrate one another’s God-given cultural differences, and offer a space of unified belonging for all people.
Justice/Mercy- We are dedicated to seeking justice and showing mercy throughout our communities. (Micah 6:8)
Diversity/Inclusion- We long to see all of Akron saturated with the Gospel and believe that to see it happen, God calls us toward ethnic and generational diversity, including many peoples in the shared leadership of Citizens Akron. (Revelation 7:9, Acts 10)
